"Darcy's Farewell"

15th June 2013

On 15th June 2013 the New England District Council and Glen Innes sub-Branch hosted a farewell dinner for outgoing President, Mr. Darcy Hassett. State Branch President Mr. Don Rowe and Mrs. Rowe, along with representatives from all District sub-Branches, gathered at the Glen Innes RSL Club for the function.

Darcy joined the RSL in 1978 at Uralla but did not immediately become an active member, due to his work commitments. However, he did what he could, when he could and his involvement grew until he became Sub-Branch Secretary in 1985. He held that position for 5 years until, in 1990, he was elected President. Darcy remained President of the Uralla sub-Branch for an amazing 23 years – only packing up his kit-bag at the end of 2012. He is now a member at Ballina sub-Branch.

During his time with the Uralla sub-Branch Darcy was a Pensions and Welfare Officer, an RSL funeral celebrant, Anzac Day Parade marshal, and general dogsbody. He was also a District Council and State Congress delegate for most of his 28 years at Uralla. For many years he also organised the annual RSL Ball and then annual dinners.

In 1995 Darcy was elected President of the New England District Council and he held that position until February 2013 – 18 years in all. He travelled our District extensively, knows everyone, and is highly regarded by all. During the dinner presentations were made to Darcy by Mrs. Sandra Lambkin, the incoming New England District Council President and Mr. Jeff Scott, President of Uralla sub-Branch.
